The Shade of Green: As you walk around your putt line and especially when you are behind the ball, view the grass in the line of your putt; if it appears darker than other areas of the green then you are putting into the grain and will need a stronger stroke. If it is lighter and shiny then you are putting with the grain and will get more roll.
In General: Light shiny grass is with the grain and likely downhill which means the ball will roll faster. Darker color is against the grain and likely uphill which means a stronger stroke will be needed.
Good putting is key to shaving strokes off your game -- good luck!
