On hole #3, I found my second shot just below the green, in some deep rough hanging on just above the edge of the lake that runs along the left side leading up to the green. So, I was left with a shot to the elevated green, small stance area and the ball sitting down in the rough. I needed to lob it up on to the green so I used a 60 degree wedge, a narrow stance. gauged the distance (20 yards), and used a steep descent with the swing to limit the grass from grabbing the club face. Had I used a sweeping swing the grass would most likely twist the club face on the way to the ball. I hit about 1" behind the ball with almost no follow through to pop it up and out. Kind of a chopping down swing. It flew up and on to the green about pin high! Unfortunately, it was 15 feet right of the hole, I miss-aimed it, not being able to stand behind the ball to aim. I had a lengthy putt for par which lipped out....darn!
The key swing tips with a deep rough shot are to play the ball in the middle of the stance to allow full use of the degrees on the wedge, aim a little right of the target (for right hander) since the grass may pull the club head a little left, hinge the wrists on the back swing, use a steep descent, hitting down on it just behind the ball. The club head should hit the ground and pop up under the ball sending it high up on to the playing surface.
